John Came
1st Lieutenant, Company C, Age 27 from Buxton
JOHN HALEY CAME was born in Buxton, Maine on 29 Apr, 1835, the son of Abraham
Lord Came and Annis Green [they were married 3 Feb, 1825 in Standish - recs of 1st Ch
of Standish]. He worked at his father's lumber business in town [1860 census], before
volunteering into the 27th Maine in Sept, 1862. While the regiment was on picket duty in
Fairfax, VA that winter, he came down with a fever and died on 16 Jan, 1863, aged 27.
His body was sent back to Buxton, and he is buried in the family's Came plot [YCCI
p381]. He was single.
