George Emmons
Private, Co I, Age 18, Res: Lyman, ME
GEORGE EMMONS was born circa 1844-45 in Lyman, Maine, the son of George W and Harriet
(Hilton) Emmons. He died on 18 Oct 1898 at age 54 in Lyman from cancer. Death record says he
was buried in the family plot, though no stone is seen there for him.
He never married.
George enlisted first into the 7th Maine Infantry on 30 Sept 1861, listed as age 19 and residence
given as Kennebunk. He was likely only 17 at the time. He received a disability discharge on 8 Mar
1862. In Sept, he would reenlist into the 27th Maine for a 9-month term of service, being mustered out
in July, 1863. His father also joined the 27th. The following year, on 20 Sept 1864, he enlisted a third
time, now joining the 9th Maine Infantry with his brother Elisha. He remained with them until the
regiment was discharged on 30 June, 1865.
His whereabouts during the 1870 and 1880 censuses are not yet known by me, but he filed for his
pension in 1888 from Maine, and was living in Lyman in 1890.
