WILLIAM H GOOCH was born in Kennebunk, Maine on 2 Sept, 1830, the son of Luther and
Ruth (Baker) Gooch. Frank A Gooch's The History of a Surname with Some Account of the Line
of John Gooch in New England (c 1926) gives the ancestry of William as: William (Luther,
Joseph, Jedediah, Benjamin, John, John). He died in Kennebunk on 16 Dec, 1909 at age
79yrs,3mos,14das, and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Kennebunk.
Around 1852 [48 yrs married in 1900], he married MARY J MURPHY, the daughter of Thomas
and Lucy (Andrews) Murphy, who was born in Biddeford, ME on 26 June, 1834 and died on 6
Mar, 1907 [YCCI,pg.932, ME VR].
Except for the brief time he lived in Biddeford after his marriage took place and his sons were
born, he lived in Kennebunk and was occupied as a house painter (as was his brother John B.,
who served alongside him during the War).
According to the 1900 census, wife Mary had 5 children, three of them living at time of the
census. It is those 3 that I've data on:
I. GEORGE H, born 17 Aug, 1858 in Biddeford, ME; died on 6 Oct, 1921 in Portland, ME at
age 63yrs,1mos,19das. Death record says he was buried in Evergreen Cem, Kennebunk [don't
see in YCCI]. He was a house painter, living in Manchester, NH and in Kennebunk. He had a
wife NELLIE A, whom he married by 1882 [28 yrs in 1910] and following six chldren:
1. Helen H, age 32 in 1920 Manch., NH census,single, a weaver in woolen mill
2. Mabel, age 36 in 1920, living with mother in Manchester, NH, she was married and had last
name of Cummings. She had a son Alfred W, b. ca.1909
3. Alice I, with parents in 1910 Manch., NH, age 24, a bookkeeper
4. Bernice, age 18 in 1910 census, a weaver in cotton mill
5. Harold C, with parents in 1910 at age 13, weaver in cotton mill
6. Caroll Francis, born 22 Jan, 1900 [WWI D.C], after 1920 census moved to New Jersey,
dying there in May, 1979 [SSDI]. In 1930, he lived in Penns Grove, Salem Co, NJ, working at an
ice making plant [census says married but noone living with him]
II. WILLIAM L, born 5 Sept, 1861 in Biddeford, ME; died in Kennebunk on 2 July, 1922 at age
60yrs,9mos,27das of cerebral hemorhage. He is buried in parents plot with his first wife IDA M
BOSTON [b. Kennebunk 1861 d. Kenn. 14 Aug, 1901], the daughter of John and Bertha (Swan)
Boston, whom he married ca 1880 [20 yrs in 1900]. He 2ndly marr BERTHA PROUT [pg 95,
Gooch Gen], and thirdly on 16 Nov, 1912 in Kennebunk to MABEL G LAWS, the daughter of
Charles H and Elizabeth (Tupper) Laws, who was born in Jamaica Plains,MA. William ran The
Sagamore, a summer hotel in Kennebunk.
He had one child by Ida:
1. Otis E , born 25 Nov, 1880 [WWI Draft Card], died 20 May, 1964 in Biddeford at age 83 [ME
Death Index] In 1920 Kennebunk census as a plumber (he worked for AM Wells in 1918), with
wife Alice and children Ida, Byron O, and William L.
By his third wife Mabel he had two daughters:
2. Mary Elizabeth, born 24 Nov, 1913 in Kennebunk [1965's Kennebunk in the Nineties book,
pg 76, calls her Mary Tate, living in Saco]
3. Ruth J, born 2 June, 1915 in Kennebunk [In 1965, she was called a retired Lt Colonel of the
Army Nurse Corps, living with mother -Kenn. in the Nineties, pg 76]
III. ISABELLE B, born circa Jan, 1866, she married on 22 Jan, 1885 [Kenn vr] to CHARLES W
HUFF, the son of Charles O and Amanda L (Tripp) Huff. He was born 29 Apr, 1864 and died
on 13 Aug, 1900. They had four children together:
1. Roy O, born 7 Mar, 1886 in Kennebunkport [VR], he died 29 Sept, 1888 aged 2yrs,7mos.
Buried in Huff Plot, Village Cemetery, Kennebunkport [YCCI, pg 985]
2. Earle W, born 28 Aug, 1888 and died on 3 Oct, 1912. Buried in family plot.
3. Gladys M, born Apr, 1890, she was married to a Smith and died in 1922, buried with father
and brothers.
4. Norma L, born in March, 1894 [1900 census], not researched after this.
