ISRAEL HANSON was born around 1833 in Lyman, Maine [based on censuses and
enlistment age], the son of William Brock Hanson and Ruth Downs. He died on 19 Jan
1890 in Lyman [Bidd Daily Jrnl: Fri, 31 Jan 1890]; his burial place not known.
The 1850 to 1880 censuses show him as single, living in Lyman. His occupations
consisted, over the years, as a farm laborer, manufacturer, and sawmill worker.
Israel had first enlisted into the 1st Maine Cavalry, Co. I, on 7 Oct, 1861 [mustered in on
the 31st] at age 28, a manufacturer being born and residing in Lyman at the time. He left
sick in Augusta when the regiment marched out, and was afterwards discharged on 15
June, 1862 [History of the 1st ME Cavalry, pg 602]. This same year he then reenlisted into
the 27th Maine Infantry, on 30 Sept, but deserted on the 7th of October in Portland while
regiment was still in training.
Three other males seen in the William B household [1850 and 1860 censuses] also
served during the Civil War: Harrison and Edwin both enlisted into Co F of the 8th Maine
Infantry on 7 Sept,1861 (the former dying in July of the following year) and Warren joined
the 25th Maine, a 9-month regiment as was the 27th. Their parents were married ca Dec,
1831 [intents filed 19 Nov, 1831 in Lyman and Waterborough, cert. issued 5 Dec in
Lyman: NEHGR v90 p332 + v97 p17].
Israel's parents are buried in the Roberts Plot in Lyman [YCCI, pg 1251], but Israel is not
found in the transcription of this cemetery. He was also not seen in either the Pension
Index or the 1890 Veteran Schedule. His father left him $1 in his will (all rest to (2nd) wife
Sally), dated 28 Apr,1873 [York County Probate #8522; v128 p51, v128 p270]
