WILLIAM E HOOPER was born ca Sept,1843 [1900 census] in (?), Franklin Co,
New York [1860,1900 censuses], the son of Nathaniel and Catherine
(Woodsom) Hooper. He died on 18 Dec 1929 [Pension Payment Cards-NARA].
He did not marry [1900-10 census data].
Following his parents marriage ca Nov, 1837 [intents filed 18 Nov, 1837 in Waterborough,ME -NEHGR v90 p336; they were both of Waterborough], they removed to Groton,Caledonia,VT, where eldest child Charles H was born ca Sept, 1838 [1900 census]. They had daughters Lucinda and Emily while in VT, and then moved to New York, where William (and brother James) was born. The exact location is not yet known (the military descriptive roll is hard to read, but was a town in Franklin Co, NY), but other siblings of Nathaniel (children of Jacob Hooper of Berwick) had located to Malone,Franklin,NY and this may be a possibility [Ancestry online tree]. By 1850, the family moved to York, Maine (the youngest child George N, was born May 1850 in York according to death rec), and lived on the farm owned by John Hooper, Nath'l's brother, who was in Groton,VT (Nathaniel later bought this property from him in 1869, 20 acres of land w/ half the dwelling house near place called Scituate: York Deeds v311 p433).
In the 1860 York, Maine census, William is seen working as a clerk, age 15. Following his service in the 27th Maine, he reenlisted afterwards on 2 Jan, 1864 into the 10th Independent Mass Battery of Light Artillery (age 21; residence York, occupation a clerk), but was discharged for disability on 30 Dec, 1864 in Ft Washington, MD. William's pension card says he was also in the 4th US Artillery, but I have found no dates for this service (the 1890 veterans schedule doesn't mention this reg).
By 1870, he was a grocer in York, age 24, living with mother Catherine and other members of his family [his father had died prior to Apr, 1869, when his will was presented to probate court - York County Probate #9705] . His whereabouts in the 1880 census is unknown, but he shows up on the 1890 Veterans Schedule for Philadelphia, PA, living at 716 Spring Garden St. A street directory for that town in this year shows two William E Hooper's, the one who was a shirtmaker living at 601 N 10th is likely the correct one, an occupation William held in the Philadelphia, PA censuses for 1900 and 1910. His pension payments were sent from the Philadelphia office, and no change was seen on the record up to his 1929 death.
