CHARLES S HUBBARD was born about 1843 in Wells, Maine [estimate by ages in census records], the son of Charles and Mehitable (Eldridge) Hubbard [they had married 20 Oct, 1832 in Wells -IGI entry]; he is seen in their household in 1850 Wells (age 7) and in 1860 Kennebunk (at age 17). He died on 31 July, 1864 from wounds he received the previous day while in Petersburg, VA. He was originally buried in "enclosed ground, Meade Station" [ME Adj Rep't, 1864-65 Vol.1 pg 209], one of many temporary burial places later reinterred to City Point National Cemetery, Hopewell,VA.

After his term of service was done with the 27th Maine, he reenlisted the following year, mustered in on 6 May, 1864 as a sergeant into Company K of the 32nd Maine Infantry. This regiment was one that took part in the seige of Petersburg, and was nearly destroyed in the notorious Battle of Burnsides Mine on 30 July, 1864. It was during this attack that Charles was mortally wounded on Cemetery Hill. The book, The Thirty-Second Maine Regiment of Infantry Volunteers, by Henry C Houston c1903 (reprint available by Higginson Boks of Salem,MA) is worth reading if interested in more about the history of this regiment.

He was listed as 'single' in both of his enlistments. His parents filed for a pension.
