The 27th Maine Volunteers
Hugh Ross
Rank: Private Company: H Age: 25 Residence: Parsonsfield
Height: 5' 7" Eye Color: Blue Hair Color: Light Complexion: Light
HUGH ROSS was born about Dec, 1837 [1900 census] in New Brunswick,
Canada, the son of Scottish born parents Hugh Ross Sr. and Mary Currie.
He died in Chelsea, Suffolk, MA on 26 Apr, 1918 [NARA pension card]. One
rec (2nd marr) gives place of birth as Bathhurst, in New Brunswick, while
Descriptive Roll shows it spelled as "Bathwright", all other rec's just list
the province.
Hugh married first, on 9 Nov, 1864 in Chelsea (or Boston) to MARGARET
TALBOT, born ca 1844 in Nova Scotia to John and Catherine [MA vr
v.173,p.163]. Her death record not yet found in MA records. Unknown if this
couple had any children, but 1870 census shows no possible ones living
with Hugh.
He secondly was married to SARAH GLASS, the daughter of William and
Phebe, on 31 Oct, 1868 in Chelsea [MA vr v.210,p.183]. She was born ca
Apr, 1845 in Ellsworth, ME, her death rec not yet recorded by me.
Though his residence is listed as Parsonsfield, there is no indication he
lived there at any time. He probably enlisted from Portland, and was
instead credited to this town. While the 1900 census give Hugh an 1860
immigration year, he may have been here by 1858 when his parents had a
child born in Maine. Prior to this, about 1849-1852, the family was located
in NewFoundland, and in New Brunswick before this. The 1851 census has
Hugh, brother William and sister Margaret living with their grandparents,
Andrew and Clarinda Currie. His father died in Charlestown, MA in 1868 at
age 69, so it looks as if the family moved from Portland, ME (there in 1860
census) to the Boston, MA area soon after Hugh was mustered out of his
service in the 27th Maine. Hugh Jr's occupation was a plasterer.
Hugh and his 2nd wife had the following children:
I. CLARA FRANCES was born 4 Dec, 1869 in Chelsea, MA [MA VR v216
p178]. She died prior to the 1920 census. She married on 26 Nov, 1890 [MA
VR v408 p250] in Boston, Suffolk, MA to LOUIS NAUMANN, the son of
Henry and Charlotta. He was born in West Roxbury (Boston) on 26 June,
1864 [1928 passenger list]. He was employed as a piano finisher [marr rec;
1900 census], and as a carpenter, building stairs [1910 census]. He died on
8 Jan, 1929 [1929 Quincy St Dir]. They had two children [1900-10 census
data]:
1. Lester Louis (Elista in 1900), born 15 Nov, 1891 in Boston [WWI, WWII
Draft Reg Cards]. In 1929, he was living in Quincy, MA with wife Thelma M
[St Dir], and by 1942, was in Wollaston, Norfolk, MA, working at the
Charlestown shipyard.
2. unknown child, 1900-10 censuses show Clara had 2 children, only 1
living, I haven't the other child yet
ii. IDA M, born May, 1874 in MA. Living with parents in 1900, age 26.
iii. ALBERT HENRY, born 17 Sept, 1875 in Boston, MA [MA vr v.270,p.197],
married on 30 June, 1908 in Malden,MA [v.578,p.518] to FLORENCE M
BADGER, born ca 1883 in Bangor, ME to Charles E and Mary E (Greenyer)
Badger. He was a shipper at a wholesale store, and was living in
Malden,MA during the 1910 census. He afterwards was in Winthrop,MA
(1920) and Quincy,MA ('30), a shipper of paint and oil supplies. They had
only one child in censuses:
1. Donald Albert, age 5/12 in 1910 (a.10 in 1920 and 20 in 1930, living
with parents)
As the 1900 census gives wife Sarah 5 children, 3 of them still living, there
are still two more that need to be found in Mass records (providing the
census #'s are correct). Ross is a fairly common name, so this may take
some time to do.
