LORENZO DOW SKILLINGS was born on 26 Apr, 1837 in Scarborough, Cumberland, ME
[Descriptive Roll], the son of Josiah and Sarah (Libby) Skillings. He died on 8 Sept, 1902 in Old
Orchard, Maine, aged 65 years [obit]. He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Biddeford, Maine
[gravestone].
He was married first, on 1 Feb, 1856 in Saco, Maine, to MEHITABLE JANE SCRIBNER, the daughter of Daniel and Hannah (Woodward) Scribner. She was born in 1835 in Waterboro, Maine [son's death rec] and died in 1866 [gravestone data]. She is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Biddeford, Maine.
He secondly married, on 6 Feb, 1868 in Lewiston, Androscoggin, ME [Lewiston VR film 0011335], to MRS ELIZABETH TOWNSEND. She was born 17 Sept, 1842 [Bidd VR p351], the daughter of Robert and Dorcas (Hatch) SPEARS. She died on 7 Aug, 1936 [grave] is is buried with her parents at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco, Maine [YCCI, p1608]. She was previously the wife of Joseph S Townsend, whom she married on 14 Jan, 1859 in Saco [Saco Records on IGI]. Perhaps they divorced, as a Joseph S married an Adaline Frost in 1868 and died in 1897. I do not find another man of this name buried in York County. Elizabeth and Joseph had a son, Willie H Townsend, born circa 1860-1862, and was living with his mother and step-father in the 1870 and 1880 Biddeford censuses.
Lorenzo was a house painter, and spent most of his life in Biddeford, Maine, except on a couple of occasions, where he is seen as a painter in other town directories, including Fall River, MA in 1873 (where his mother was living at same time) and Dover, NH before 1900.
He had two known children by his first wife (surname Skillings):
I. ORRIN MANSON was born in Biddeford, Maine [ME Death Rec] on 18 Dec 1858 [1900 census; date calculated from age at death]. He died on 4 Jan 1905 in Saco, Maine at age 47 yrs, 16 das from a concussion received by falling down stairs [ME Death Rec]. He was buried with his parents in Woodlawn Cemetery, Biddeford [YCCI, p168]. He married, on 31 Mar 1881 in Biddeford [ME Marr Rec - Old City Recs], to MARY BURKE "of Danvers, MA", born ca 1867 in Ireland to Thomas and Catherine (Moran) Burke [NH Death Rec]. Orrin was living in a boarding house in 1900 Laconia, Belknap, NH census, "Married 20 yrs", though Mary is not with him. She had moved to Manchester, NH by 1895, where died on 19 Apr 1915 from pneumonia and tuberculosis. She was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Dorchester, MA [NH Death Rec].
II. LAURA ALMAY was born 10 Mar, 1861 in Biddeford, ME and died on 6 July, 1954. She is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Biddeford [YCCI, p203]. She was married to WILLIAM A RUMERY, who was born in 1857 and died in 1928 [YCCI, p203]. They lived in Biddeford, Maine, and had three children:
1. Mabel J, born 1882 and died 1930 [YCCI, p203]. She married first to Howard P Andrews, on 3 Mar, 1902 [ME Marr], and had a son Paul age 8 in 1910 census. Her surname is DeWitt on grave, perhaps the one who married Jacob Dewitt and was living in Biddeford during 1930 census.
2. Linwood William was born 8 Apr, 1885 [WWI Draft Card-1918]. He married Helen E. York on 26 Oct, 1914 [ME Marr]
3. Frederick D was born in 1887 [grave; 1900 census has Mar 1886] and died in 1951. He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Biddeford [YCCI, p170]
