GEORGE WASHINGTON WAKEFIELD was born circa Jan 1833 [1900 census; based on ages in other census rec's; age at enlistment would indicate an 1835 year] in Conway, Carroll, NH [Descriptive Roll], the son of John and Mary Wakefield presumably the one living with Ivory and Edna Wakefield in 1850 Kennebunk census at age 17. He died on 3 Dec 1903 in Pawtucket, Providence, RI.

At time of enlistment, he was married, but name of first wife not yet known. The letters of Charles Gooch make mention of him being married, circumstances described therein may indicate he was divorced after returning home.

George married secondly, on 24 Jan, 1867, probably in Kennebunk, to
MARY ENGLISH [Kennebunk VR]. She was the daughter of Asa and Phebe English. She was born ca July 1833 [1900 census] and died on 29 Mar 1907 in Pawtucket, RI.

Following his service in the 27th Maine, he reenlisted as a corporal into Co. L of the 2nd Maine Cavalry, aged 28. He was promoted to Full Sergeant in 1864, and was mustered out on 6 Dec, 1865 in Barancas,FL.

Called a ship carpenter on his marriage record of 1867, he was listed as a farmer in the following census. Prior to the 1880 census, he removed with wife and daughter to Pawtucket, RI, where he was occupied as a house carpenter. He likely died there, as widow filed for a pension from Rhode Island.

George and Mary had one child:

I.
PHOEBE E, born 30 June, 1868 in Kennebunk, ME [Kenn. VR]. Lived with parents, didn't marry. Alive in 1918 [Pawtucket Street Directory], living at prior house of her parents at 58 Lyon St. She worked as a dressmaker.
