WILLIAM H SHAPLEIGH was born on 26 Nov 1842 in Eliot, Maine [Descriptive Roll], the
son of William and Susan F (Johnson) Shapleigh [NEHGR v95 p273]. He died on 26 Aug
1864 [NEHGR v95 p273] and is buried in the family graveyard on Goodwin Rd in Eliot,
Maine [YCCI, p675].
Around 1863, he was married to MARY E SHOREY, the daughter of Charles Shorey. She
was born 5 Apr 1844, and died on 31 Jan 1923. She is buried in the Shorey family
cemetery on Old Fields Rd in South Berwick [YCCI, p2081]. After her husbands death, she
had remarried to Alfred Proctor. The 1900 census numbers give her 2 children, both dec'd,
but the 1910 census has "ch 3/3". Records say that William died "d.s.p." [NEHGR v95
p273], so these children perhaps belonged to her 2nd husb.
In the genealogy Alexander Shapleigh and Some of His Descendants [NEHGR v95
p272-273], the following ancestry for William is given as:
William (William, Oliver, John Dependence, John3)
