JOHN R WILSON was born ca 1842 in Jewett City (Griswold), New London, CT, the son of Scottish-born parents James and Marion (Moore) Wilson. He died on 30 Sept 1898 [grave; NJ Deaths] in Jersey City, New Jersey [NJ Deaths, 1720-1988], aged 55 yrs [grave]. He is buried in the Dorman-Maddox (aka Community) Cemetery in Newfield, Maine.
He was married, date unknown, to ELIZABETH (aka LIZZIE) DORMAN, the daughter of Benjamin H and Julia Ann (Maddox) Dorman (and sister to George H Dorman, who also served in the 27th Maine). She was born in Newfield, Maine on 11 Nov 1844 [calc from age at death], and died in Jersey City, NJ [NJ Deaths] on 5 Jan 1890, aged 45 yrs, 1 mo, 25 das. She is buried in the Dorman-Maddox Cemetery.
John lived in Norwich, CT when young [1850 census], moving to Newfield, Maine with his widowed mother and siblings prior to 1860. His whereabouts during the 1870 census is unknown, but his wife Lizzie was living in Huntsville, AL with his sister Janett and her husband John D Swasey. The following year, John and Lizzie may have lived in Port Jervis, New York, as their son was born there. In the mid 1870's, they would relocate to Jersey City, NJ, where John worked as a machinist. They remained here until their deaths.

He married in Newfield, on 20 Nov 1907 [ME VR], to LUELLA E. HORNE, the daughter of George E. and Luna Bell (Reed) Horne. She was born 15 Jan 1882 in Acton, Maine, and died 9 Aug 1969 in Bridgton, ME [Early Fam of Newfield]. He left Jersey City around 1895-96, returning to his mother's home town of Newfield. There, he lived with his Aunt Jennie, the wife of Clement J. Adams (a 27th Maine veteran), employed for a time as a farmer. He would afterwards work in a box shop, and would be the town postmaster in the 1920-30's. They had no children.
