William A Allen
Rank: Cpl Co: E Age: 20 Residence: Sanford Birthplace: Sanford Occupation: shoemaker Married/Single: S Height: 5' 10.5 Eyes: Hz Hair: Blk Complexion: F

WILLIAM A ALLEN was born 12 Oct 1842 in Sanford, the son of Emilus and Sarah G (Hanson) Allen. He died on 29 Apr 1911 in Boston, MA [MA VR] at age 68 yrs, 6 mos, 16 das, and was buried in Cambridge Cemetery, Cambridge, MA [MA VR].

He married first on 6 Dec 1863, presumably in Sanford, to LOUISA J BENNETT, the daughter of Rufus and Lucy C (Hanson) Bennett. She was born in Alfred, ME, perhaps about Oct 1847 [based on age at death], and she died in Cambridge, MA on 12 Dec 1901 of spastic paralysis at age 54 yrs,1 mos, 20 das [MA VR v.517,p.453]. Death rec says that she was buried in Sanford, but I haven't found this yet.

William married 2nd on 6 Mar 1905 in Boston, MA to MARION BOYD ALLEN, the daughter of Stillman B and Harriet M (Seward) Allen, her father a lawyer in Boston [MA VR v.557,p.45]. She was born in Boston on 23 Oct 1863 [MA VR], and was living in 1920. She was a studio portrait artist and lived with her brother Willis at 477 Commonwealth Ave, William staying here as well after his marriage to her.

In his early years, William had occupations of engineer and carpenter, but by 1880 was in the printing business. The History of Sanfrod, pg 407, mentions a printing and shipping tag industry founded by William A Allen in town, with building on Washington St. Early Families of Sanford by Boyle, pg 6, says he was "a master mechanic who lived in Sanford and Boston".

William and first wife Louisa had one child:

i. CARRIE L ALLEN, born 4 Mar 1865 [E.F.S.-Boyle], I last see her with parents on 1880 census at age 15, but haven't located her after this. If she married, I didn't find a record of this in Mass records, so might have taken place in Sanford.

additional source data:
1850 Sanford census: William age 7 with parents all "born Sanford"
1860 Sanford (pg 42) h.h. 345/315
1870 Sanford (pg 37) h.h. 293/303
