Chronology - 1862

​AUGUST
04 Presidential order for 300,000 militia needed for service, for nine-months, a special draft to be made in those states not furnishing their quota by the 15th (the deadline was later extended). 9609 men were needed from Maine and enough volunteers were raised to avoid a draft this time.

SEPTEMBER
10 Volunteers begin going into camp at Camp Abraham Lincoln, Portland, ME
19 Election of the field and staff officers
30 Mustering in for majority of the 27th ME

OCTOBER
05 Deserted: E.Boston, H.Sawyer
07 Deserted: I.Hanson
08 Died: J.Porter
10 Deserted: F.Hill, C.Hussey, W.Joy (or 12th)
12 Deserted: W.Gilpatrick
14 Mustering in for several soldiers (4 in Co C, 1 in Co F)
15 42 additional troops mustered in (while others on short home leave), Promoted: G.Dorman
16 Deserted: I.Matthews, S.Wilkinson
17 2 men in Co I must. in [last of the enlistments before leaving Portland], Deserted: E.Lander (or 15th)
18 Deserted: J.Blaborn, Died: J.Earle
   On the morning of Saturday, the 18th, at 7:30 AM, men from the 27th Regiment, along with the Portland Band, escorted the 23rd Maine Infantry to the train station in Portland, set to leave for the seat of war. The 25th having left days earlier, the 27th was the last to leave, scheduled to march out on Monday morning. The troops got restless on this Saturday night, and set fire to their sutler's tent​ [see: A No-Show for Sunday Service]

The Portland Daily Press, on 22 Oct 1862 (pg 3), reported that the 27th Maine had reached Jersey City early on the 21st, with a hot breakfast provided by the New England Rooms.

16 En route to Alexandria for shipping out to New Orleans, orders canceled and they returned to camp
