PHILIP BANFIELD, perhaps born around 1834 [based on age of 28 when enlisting in 1862 and age 30 in 1864] in Cork, Ireland [Descriptive Roll], perhaps the son of Michael and Mary [MA death rec]. He is probably the man who died at Boston City Hospital on 31 Oct. 1912, age 77 and was buried in Tewksbury, MA.The Togus Soldiers Home file shows him being dropped in Jan 1913.
After his service with the 27th ME was done, he enlisted into Company M, 1st Mass Cavalry, on 4 Jan. 1864, age 30, as a sergeant. His residence was given as Boston this time, his occupation a farmer. The 1890 Vet Schedule says that he suffered a gunshot wound in the head during the Battle of the Wilderness on 6 May 1864. Soldiers Home records say it was a gunshot flesh wound at the nape of neck. He was mustered out on 26 June, 1865 in Washington, DC.
Philip Banfield enlisted twice more following the Civil War, first on 31 Jan 1866 at New York City, with Co A, 1st US Cavalry. He was discharged on 31 Jan 1869 at Fort Klamath, Oregon. He would reenlist at New York on 20 Mar 1871 with Co E, 4th United States Infantry. From them, he would desert on 7 June 1871.
I find someone of this name on a New York City passenger list, arriving on ship Rising Star from Aspinwall, Panama on 8 March, 1869, a Philip Banfield age 40, engineer. This could be the same person, as age matches the individual I'm seeking and name is fairly uncommon. As he was discharged from the US Cavalry in Jan 1869 at Oregon, this is likely him returning home to New York.
Philip was admitted into the Southern Branch Soldiers Home in Sept 1881, disabled from night blindness and a gun shot flesh wound on his neck. He was 45 years old, single, having last resided at Sanford, Maine. He transferred to the NW (Milwaukee, WI) Branch on 19 March 1884, seen there on the 1890 Veteran Schedule. On 21 July 1891, he moved to the Eastern Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (at Togus in Chelsea, Maine). He is there for the 1900 and 1910 censuses, the latter saying that he was single, age 74 [so born ca 1836], born in Ireland, and he had immigrated here in 1856.
