JOHN W BROWN, likely the son of Nathaniel and Dorcas (Bradeen) Brown, was born circa 1843 in Waterboro, Maine [Descriptive Roll]. He was killed in action at Petersburg, Virginia on 18 June 1864, and is buried in City Point National Cemetery in Hopewell, VA.

A farmer from Waterboro, he followed his service in the 27th Maine by reenlisting the following year with the 32nd Maine. Mustered in on 5 Apr 1864 as a private in Company F, he would be killed in front of Petersburg just two months later. On Saturday, 18 June 1864, the 32nd Maine provided support for an assault on the defenses of Petersburg, with Private Brown and Pvt Daniel Bennett of Wells being killed, and eight others wounded. John was originally buried in "enclosed ground, Meade Station", one of numerous cemeteries later disinterred and moved to City Point National Cemetery. He lies in Section A, Grave 1711.

John's brother, Philip A Brown, also served with the 27th Maine, enlisting from Hollis, Maine into Company C.
