Benjamin Buttrick
Rank: Pvt Co: I Age: 39 Residence: Kennebunk Birthplace: Windham, NH Occupation: carp Married/Single: M Height: 5' 8.5 Eyes: Bl Hair: Gr Complexion: Lt

BENJAMIN BUTTRICK, the son of Asa Buttrick, was born circa 1822-1823 [based on ages on 1850, 1860 censuses; enlistment roll] in Windham, NH [Descriptive rolls; death rec]. He died on 7 Dec 1882 in Chelsea,MA [MA VR v339, p346] of natural causes at age 59. His burial place is not known at this time.

On 30 July 1845 in Kennebunk [Kenn VR] Benjamin married OLIVIA McINTIRE, the daughter of Phineas and Maria N (Tucker) McIntire. She was born in Kennebunkport, ME on 24 May 1825 and died in Kennebunk on 14 Mar 1903 [ME VR; McIntire Family, pg 26].

The 1850 Biddeford, ME census lists Benjamin as a laborer, born in Maine. The 1860 Kennebunk census is more detailed and gives a birth place of Kennebunkport, ME, his occupation now as a blacksmith. The 1880 census gives him a NH birthplace, now working as a wheelwright in Pelham, Hillsborough, NH. Wife Olivia was still living in Kennebunk at this time, where she is called single, aged 60. Ben's death rec continues to call him a wheelwright, married, giving him a Windham, NH birthplace and father's name as Asa. It is possible this may be a different Benjamin, but his age matches earlier sources, and his son was living in Chelsea at this time.

Benjamin and Olivia had two children:

I. OLIVIA D BUTTRICK, b. 29 May 1846 in Kennebunk, ME and died in town on 24 June 1846 of lung fever [Kennebunk VR]

II. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BUTTRICK was born on 11 Jan 1851 in Kennebunk or Biddeford, ME [VR, 1860 census; marr rec says b. Biddeford, ME]. He died on 9 Sept 1935 and was buried in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport [YCCI, p101]. On 1 Aug 1875 in Boston, MA [MA VR v273,p95] he married MARY ELIZABETH FLYNN, the daughter of Bartholomew and Elizabeth J. Flynn. She was ca 1850 in England [marr rec] and died on 12 May 1908 [YCCI, p101]. She is buried with husband in Arundel. Benjamin married secondly to ELLEN A LANE on 19 Feb 1923 [ME Marr Rec Index - both of Kennebunk]. Ellen was aged 68 in 1930 census, born in MA (her parents born Irish Free State). Benjamin was a machinist living in Chelsea, MA, working at the Charleston Navy Yard for many years until his return to Kennebunk in the latter years of his life.
