John H Came

Died of Disease, 16 Jan 1863

JOHN HALEY CAME was born in Buxton, Maine on 29 Apr 1835 [Buxton VR bk 4, pg 248], the son of Abraham Lord Came and Annis Green. He worked at his father's lumber business in town [1860 census], before volunteering into the 27th Maine in Sept 1862. While the regiment was on picket duty in Fairfax County, VA that winter, he came down with a fever and died on 16 Jan 1863 near Camp Vermont, aged 27. His body was sent back to Buxton, and he is buried in the family's Came plot [YCCI p381]. He was single.

Inscription on the monument for John in the Came family cemetery states "erected by the company of the deceased".
