Samuel J C Clarrage
Rank: Pvt Co: E Age: 36 Residence: Wells Birthplace: Lynn, MA Occupation: farmer Married/Single: M Height: 5' 10 Eyes: Bl Hair: Lt Complexion: Lt

SAMUEL JOSEPH C CLARRAGE was born ca 1826 in Lynn, MA, the son of William and Mary Clarrage [marr rec, age 24 in 1850]. He died in Lynn, Essex, MA on 24 Nov 1874 from consumption. He was aged 48 yrs,10 mos [MA VR v265 p230], and is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn [Find a Grave].

He married on 19 May 1850, in Lynn, MA, to ANN MARIA CREDIFORD, the daughter of Oliver and Nancy (Goodwin) Crediford. She was born in Wells, Maine circa Mar 1835 [1900 census], and death was after 1900. She remarried on 5 Oct, 1881 to Frank G Bradford [MA VR v325 p281]

According to census records, Samuel always lived in Lynn, MA, and worked as a cordwainer (shoemaker). His wife was originally from Wells, moving to Lynn with family when young, but not sure of the circumstances as to why he joined a Maine regiment, unless he was briefly in town. Samuel filed for a pension on 2 Dec 1870 (app #166,776 cert #122,656)

Two children are seen with Samuel and Ann in census records. The 1900 census credits Ann (now a Bradford) with having only two children (both alive at time of enumeration)

I. ELENORA AROLINE CLARRAGE (aka Elnora, Ellen N, Ella Nora) was born on 16 Mar 1853 in Lynn, MA [MA VR v72 p208]. She married to CHARLES E LEWIS on 27 Oct 1873 in Lynn, MA [MA VR v253 p273], the son of Charles and Ellen E Lewis. He was born in Peabody, MA or Danvers, MA ca 1849 (age 24 in 1873; a.31 in 1880). They lived in Lynn, where he worked in the shoe shops. They had at least two children:
   1. Anna E Lewis, age 5 in 1880 census
   2. Clara Ellen Lewis, b. 18 July 1879 in Lynn [MA VR v304 p241]

II. WILLIAM OLIVER CLARRAGE, born 22 Mar 1858 in Lynn, MA [MA VR v114 p239]. Alive during 1900 census. He married RUTH W STODDARD ca 1876 (marr 24 yrs in 1900), who was born in Apr, 1858 [1900 Lynn census] in Danvers,MA. She died in 1910 (rec not viewed) He was also a shoe maker in the Lynn factories. The 1900 census data gives William and Ruth four children, three of them alive (I haven't found the child who died young):
   1. Merrill Rupert Clarrage, b. 8 Aug 1876 in Lynn [WWI Draft Reg Card]. He marr Annie L Keene, the dau of George A and Lydia A (Thompson) Keene, on 26 Nov 1902 in Lynn [MA VR v524 p517]. By 1918, they had moved to Wells, Maine, where he was a track laborer for the Boston + Maine Railroad in Biddeford [Draft Card].
   2. Lester Leland Clarrage, b. 18 July 1878 in Lynn [MA VR v295 p244]. He marr on 1 July 1902 in Lynn [MA VR v524 p498] to Josephine Bennett Parker, the dau of Joseph and Josephine (Bennett) Parker. They lived in Lynn. He was an edge fitter/cutter for the William T Black Co [WWI Draft Reg Card].
   3. Evie M Clarrage, b. Dec 1880 [1900 census]. She was working as a presser in a shoe factory during the 1900 census. I haven't researched her further.
