JOHN CONNOR, the son of Moses and Roxanna (Durgin) Connor, was born in Limerick, Maine on 9 Aug 1843 [NH death rec; 1900 census: "Aug 1843"]. He died in Sunapee, NH on 8 Sept 1912, aged 69 yrs, 1 mo, from heart disease. He was buried in Chelsea, MA (cemetery not yet known) [NH vr].
He married, on 8 Sept 1875 in Springfield, MA [MA vr], JOSEPHINE AUGUSTA WINKLEY. The daughter of Jeremiah O. and Frances (Nutter) Winkley, she was born in Boston, MA on 1 Aug 1855 [MA VR v.92 pg 69]. She died after 1940.
As did many others from the 27th Maine, John would reenlist as a "veteran volunteer". He signed up on 1 Jan 1864 with the 2nd Maine Cavalry, and was mustered in on 7 Jan. He served with them until 6 Dec 1865, when the regiment was mustered out. He signed both enlistments as "John Conner".
John lived in Limerick up to the mid-1870's, listed as a farmer and a clerk. By 1875, he had removed to Springfield, MA, and began his life-long career as a paper hanger. He soon moved to Boston, and then went on to Chelsea. He left there by 1904, briefly living in Waltham, MA, before moving with his family to Sunapee, NH. Following John's death, Josie and her children moved to Newport, NH, and lived there through 1937, when they moved to Pittsfield, NH. They are all seen there in the 1940 census.
His surname was written as "Connor" and "Conner", and probably varied depending on who recorded the events. Most early city directories used -or, though -er became the more common spelling in later records.

*Note: Though the descriptive rolls of the 27th Maine listed his birth place as Parsonsfield, his reenlistment papers with the 2nd Cavalry said Limerick, as did his marriage record (and one of his children's birth records). The "History of Parsonsfield", pg 372, said that "Moses married Roxanna Durgin of Limerick and resided in that town".
