Charles M Cross
Rank: Ass't Surg Co: S Age: 29 Residence: Kittery <No other Data on Descriptive Rolls>
Enl as 1st Lt, Co F; Promoted 12 Feb 1863 to Asst Surg, Appointed 14 Feb

CHARLES M CROSS was perhaps born circa Aug 1834 in Wilmot, NH to John Cross (b.Wilmot) and Caroline E (b.Hancock). NH marriage records has a John marrying a Caroline Whittemore on 29 Sept 1831, which could be this couple. Charles died in October 1863 from Typhoid Fever at age 29 yrs, 2 mos [no place given in NH vr for death, this rec reported from Wilmot]. He was buried in Wilmot, Bunker Hill Cemetery [SUVCW Grave Reg].

He married, date unknown, to ANN LOUISE KIMBALL. She was buried with him in Bunker Hill Cemetery, Wilmot.

Charles was listed as a farmer in 1850 Wilmot census while he lived with his parents, and seen as a school teacher in 1860 Conway, NH, living (w/Ann) in household of Reuben Kimball, a congregational clergyman. When he died, his occupation was a physician, so may have taken this profession after his military service was up. I don't see records of him reenlisting after the muster out of the 27th ME on 17 July 1863.

There were no children listed with Charles and Ann in 1860 census, and I don't find her in 1870 census to see if she had any Cross offspring. His parents, John and Caroline, are still in Wilmot in 1870, but there are no youngsters living with them that may indicate grandchildren.

1860 Conway, Carroll Co, NH
