GEORGE H DORMAN was born in Newfield, Maine on 1 Aug 1841 [Dorman Gen, pg 328; Early Fam of Newfield, pg 204], the son of Benjamin H and Julia Ann (Maddox) Dorman. He died on 4 Dec 1873, aged 32 yrs, 4 mos [grave] and is buried in the Dorman-Maddox (aka Community) Cemetery n Newfield.
He was married, in Dover, NH on 28 Nov 1867 [NH Marr Rec], to FANNIE A DAVIS, the daughter of Alonzo and Marion (Wilson) Davis. She was born in Norwich, CT [Death Rec] on 1 Apr 1850 [Early Fam of Newfield], and died in Somersworth, NH on 13 Sept 1913 [NH VR], and is buried with her parents in Forest Glade Cemetery, Somersworth.
Prior to his service in the 27th Maine, George had served in Company D, 7th Maine Infantry. He had enlisted on 27 Aug 1861, and was mustered in on 7 Sept. He received a disability discharge on 23 Apr 1862.
He worked as a farm laborer on his father's farm in Newfield [1870 census]. George did not seem to be in good health after the war, as he had applied for a pension on 15 Sept 1869 (app #148,020; cert #101,832). Following his death, widow Fannie would return to Somersworth, where her family was living. She applied for a widow's pension on 18 May 1874 (app #215,434; cert #167,159). Both the "Dorman Genealogy" and "Early Families of Newfield" relate a story of Fannie moving for a time to Cambridge, Mass and buying a small store there, but I did not see her name in any of the street directories for that city.
George had two sisters that grew to adulthood, and both would marry men who also served in the 27th Maine: Sarah Jane (aka Jennie) Dorman married Clement J Adams, and Elizabeth (aka Lizzie) married John R Wilson (who was also the uncle of George's wife Fannie).
Only one child was born to George and Fannie:
i. NEVA S DORMAN, born 18 July 1868 [Early Fam of Newfield, pg 204]; died from consumption, either on 12 Sept 1869 [Early Fam of Newfield], on in March 1870 [1870 Mort. Schedule for Newfield]
