Franklin Emery
Rank: Pvt Co: B Age: 21 Residence: South Berwick Birthplace: South Berwick Occupation: carpenter
Married/Single: S Height: 5' 11 Eyes: Bl Hair: Br Complexion: Lt

FRANKLIN EMERY, the son of Rufus and Nancy (Hamilton) Emery, was born on 20 Oct 1840 [ME vr] in South Berwick, Maine [Descriptive Roll]. He died on 1 May 1866, perhaps in town, aged 25 yrs, 6 mos [grave], and was buried in the Emery family plot, on Emery's Bridge Rd in South Berwick [YCCI, 2104].

Living with his parents in South Berwick during the 1850 census, I have yet to find him in the 1860 one. He was a carpenter according to his enlistment papers.

I didn't find a record of him marrying.

Additional Source Data:
1850 South Berwick, York, ME census: hh 105/110; Franklin, age 10

1860 South Berwick, ME census (pg ); Rufus, Nancy, Julia and Henry - didn't find Franklin in town
- VR of Berwick, So Berwick and No Berw, pg 523 lists the family record for Rufus and Nancy. They had 14 children.

Of interest is the "Michael Bowden" who is buried in this Emery Cemetery with a veteran stone. He was a resident of Orono, Maine when he enlisted down in Massachusetts, and served with Co H, 11th Massachusetts Infantry (6/3/1864 - 6/19/1865). The headstone order shows him dying on 9/22/1870 and buried in South Berwick. The 1860 Orono census shows one Michael Emery, age 28, b.ME, a millman. This is likely Michal(sic) B. Emery, born 22 Jan 1833, son of Rufus and Nancy [Vr of Berw, So Berw and No Berw, pg 523]. As his grandmother was a Bowden, it seems probable this was his middle name, and he enlisted under an alias. In 1870, he was Michael D(sic) Emery, age 37, living with his parents in South Berwick, farm laborer.
