Stephen, while he lived in Newfield, worked as a farmer. He went to Newburyport, MA with his brother Hercules Fernald in 1855, working as overseers in the Bartlett Mill, but he returned to Newfield in 1860 with his wife and child. Following his time in the service for his country, he removed first to Haverhill, MA, and then went back to Newburyport by 1869, returning to his overseer work at the same mill.
