ELIAS LANDER (alias JOHN SMITH) was born circa 1836-39 [age 26 in 1862 enlistment, age 24 in 1863; Mar 1833 in 1900 census] in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia (or Belgium, or France), the son of Simon and Elizabeth/Isabelle (Joyce) Landry [1865 Marr Rec; Death rec]. He died (as John A. Smith) in Boston, MA, on 27 July 1904, aged (error) 54 yrs, 4 mos, 10 das, from apoplexy [MA VR]. He was buried in the Steep Falls Cemetery, Standish, Maine.
He was listed as a married man, according to the 27th ME adjutant reports, but an early marriage record for him has yet to be found. It may be an error, as the following marriage was listed as his first. He was married in Boston, MA, on 13 Jul 1865 [MA vr], to SARAH E (WILLIAMS) COFFIN. The daughter of James and Margaret Williams, she was born in New York City ca 1835 (age 30 on marr rec). She died in Augusta, Maine in 1888, according to pension papers (not found in Augusta VR). Burial place not yet known. |
He secondly married, on 10 Mar 1890 in Steep Falls, ME [Pension Papers], to CATHARINE "KATE" M HAZARD (ie HAZZARD or or HASSETT). Intents filed in Standish on 3 Mar 1890 [Standish, ME VR: Marr Ints, pg 33; cert issued 3/8] gives John a residence of Standish, while Katie was from Portland. She was born about July 1866 [1900 census] in Maine (also seen as Ottawa, Canada and Edinburgh, Scotland), and died in Revere, MA on 16 Feb 1941 [Boston Globe, 18 Feb 1941, pg 9].
Not much is known of Elias' whereabouts just prior to the war, or where he lived in the year following his desertion from Camp Lincoln, a few days before the regiment left for Virginia. He would again enlist a year later, this time as a substitute for a drafted man with the 5th New Hampshire Infantry. He took the name of "John Smith", and signed up for three years on 29 Sept 1863. The following April, however, he was transferred into the Navy, and served until being mustered out on 11 July 1865 in Boston, MA. He was a boatswain mate, and served on board the USS Ohio, William Bacon, and the Matthew Vassar. When he filed his pension decades later, he wrote that he was injured in a fall in Jan 1864 at Point Lookout, Maryland, resulting in an "inward rupture", as well as disease of the spine. He spent time in a hospital in Portland, ME in 1863, Charleston, SC in 1864 and '65, in New York City in 1868, and in Liverpool, England, for 18 months in 1868 and 1869! He took to the sea after the war, listed as a mariner and sailor in records, but may have given up this occupation soon after.
Both the 1870 and 1880 censuses show that Elias and Sarah were living in Limerick, Maine with son Arthur. The Agriculture Schedule for the latter census lists Elias as owning the property, having 8 acres of improved land, and 22 acres of unimproved. Between 1889-1890 (using dates/ages on pension papers), he had removed to Standish, Maine. He was listed as a farmer in the 1900 census. He had purchased two lots of land in the Steep Falls area, on the county road near meadow road, in 1891 and 1897 [Cumb. Cty Deeds, 682/278; 752/154]. He deeded them to his wife Kate in 1901 and, by the end of the year, they are found in Boston [city directories first written as John, then "John A." (he was Andrew J. in Marie's birth rec), where he worked as a laborer and foundryman. He purchased property at 416 Bremen St. in East Boston [1/16/1902, Suffolk Cty Deed 2800/433]. Following his death, Catharine stayed at this address for a few more years [1905-07 City Dir], until moving over to Revere, where she lived until her death in 1941.

The above clipping is from the History of the Fifth New Hampshire, showing the John Smiths in Company K. While the first is the one linked to Elias/John and his navy pension, I almost tend to believe that perhaps it is the other one, shown with a Belgian birthplace, as he was a sailor when he enlisted. The descriptive rolls also gives him a 5' 4" height, as was Elias Lander, while the Irish-born Smith was 5' 10 1/2". - Something to look into another day!
