ARTHUR LIBBY was born in Limington, ME on 7 Mar 1843, the son of Ferdinand and Jane (Smith) Libby [Libby Family, pg 525] NOTE: See Early Families of Limington, ME (pg 185) for further data on the earlier generations of Libby's in this town. He died on 18 Sept 1911 in Saco, ME at age 68 yrs,6 mos,11 das from 'indigestion with a fatty heart' and was buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Saco, ME [ME VR; YCCI, pg 1705].
He married first, on 29 Nov 1867, to SUSAN CLARK of Hollis, the daughter of Ivory and Betsey (Maddox) Clark. She was born 10 Jan 1846 and died on 14 May 1894 in Portland, Maine [ME death rec]. She was buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco.
He secondly was married, on 4 Dec 1897 in Saco [ME vr], to ELIZA A DAVIS, who died on 30 July 1906 at age 62 yrs, 8 mos,14 das [YCCI, pg 1705]. She was also a widow, the daughter of Hugh and Sarah (Nason) Warren, born in Standish, ME in Nov 1844 [ME vr; 1900 census].
From "The Libby Family in America 1602-1881" by Charles T Libby, pg 525, was the following: "He served 3 enlistments against the rebellion. He was a machinist by trade and has been employed in Buxton and Saco". Census records confirm that he was a machinst, living in Biddeford, Hollis, and Saco, as well as birth town of Limington prior to the Civil War. With John P Kelly he had a spring manufacturer business "Kelly and Libby" on Elm St in Biddeford.
When the first call for troops came in 1861 by President Lincoln, to serve a three-month service, Arthur Libby signed up on 25 Apr 1861, and was enlisted into the 1st NH Infantry, Co B, on 2 May (age 18 from Rochester,NH). This unit saw no fighting, except for some shooting at the Confederates across a river at Conrad's Ferry. They were mustered out on 9 Aug 1861 in Concord, NH. His second duty was with the 27th Maine, from 30 Sept 1862 to 17 July 1863. He thirdly joined Company I, 30th Maine Infantry, on 6 Jan 1864 (ago 20 from Limington). He was promoted to Full Corporal in 1864, and was with the regiment when they were involved in the Battles of Sabine Crossroads and Pleasant Hill, LA (8-9 Apr, '64) and at Cane River Crossing (23 Apr, '64). He was mustered out on 20 Aug 1865 in Savannah, GA. The Pension Index confirms all 3 enlistments belonged to same man.
By his first wife Susan (Susie) he had two daughters:
I. ROSA BELLE LIBBY, born 10 Nov 1870 [Libby Family, p.525] and died on 7 June 1901 [YCCI, pg 1705]. She was married 27 Apr 1892 [ME Marr] to GEORGE A SPRAGUE, who was born in Dec, 1851 [1900 census], and employed as an insurance agent. They had one child in 1900:
1. Arthur A Sprague was b. 10 Sep 1893 in Saco [WWI Draft Card+1900 census], and d. 13 July 1980 in Waterville, ME [ME Death Index]. Seen with his father up in Searsmont and Liberty, Waldo Co, ME for the 1930+'30 censuses, though at time of the World War, Arthur was living in Saco, ME working as an auto chauffeur.
II. HATTIE GERTRUDE LIBBY was born 10 Dec, 1875 [Libby, p.525], and died in 1949 [g.s.-inscrip. says 1877 for birth year]. She had first married GUY CARLETON SHOREY, the son of Alonzo and Amy Shorey (he was born in Benton Falls or Albion, ME) on 30 June 1897 in Saco [ME Marr], and was living in Hollis, ME during the 1900 census. They later divorced, and he remarried to Blanche E Hoyt/Cook in 1916, while she married secondly to JERE SHAW GORDON (born 22 Nov 1886 Biddeford, died 1930) on 24 Jun 1907 [ME Marr], but were divorced by 1920. Hattie lived most of her life in Biddeford, ME. She had the following children:
1. Carleton Arthur Shorey, b. 18 Sept 1898 in Biddeford, ME [ME vr, WWI Draft Card + SSDI], and d. 13 Apr 1989 [SSDI + ME Death Index]. He had married a Ruby A Whittier on 1 Oct, 1919.
2. Susan M Shorey, b. 25 July 1900 in Hollis, ME. Married to Carroll A Tarr (29 Mar,1898-18 Feb,1975) and lived in Biddeford. As of 1956 street directory, this couple were still living in Biddeford. They had a daughter, Edna Rose, born 6 Apr 1918 and died 8 Nov 1935, buried in the Arthur Libby plot in Saco.
3. Rose E Shorey, b. in W. Buxton [marr rec], age 17 in 1920 census. Was married on 30 Oct 1921 in Biddeford, ME [ME vr] to George Edgar Williams. She and two young daughters were living with her mother in 1930 Biddeford .
