JOHN MARTIN, the son of JONATHAN and MARY (GILMAN) MARTIN, was born in Buxton, Maine on 8 Nov 1839 [grave; Buxton VR, Bk 4 pg 223]. He died there, on 5 Nov 1896, from a congestion in his lungs, at age 56 yrs [ME Death Rec]. He was buried in the Martin (now Martin-Titcomb-Elwell) Cemetery in Buxton.

He was married to ELIZABETH "LIZZIE" L TITCOMB, the daughter of Nathan W and Locada Titcomb, about Oct 1863 (intents filed 28 Sept 1863; cert issued 3 Oct '63; no marr rec found in Buxton Vr or York County recs). She was born on 3 Feb 1840 in Effingham, NH [NH Birth Rec], and died on 19 Jan 1932 [grave]. She is also buried in the Martin Cemetery.
The early census records (1850 and 1860), as well as the Buxton Vital Records, list "John" as Jonathan Jr, named for his father. For his enlistment into the 27th Maine in 1862, he signed as "John Martin", and used this name afterwards. He lived his entire life in Buxton, Maine, where he was employed as a farmer. His obituary, run in the Biddeford Weekly Journal (11/13/1896), mentions him being a Mason, an Odd Fellow and a Knight of Pythias, whose symbolism can be seen on the base of his gravestone. He was also in the G.A.R. (on stone).
