Mills gravestone
ELIHU J MILLS, the son of Joseph and Mary Mills, was born in Lebanon, Maine [Descriptive rolls] ca 1827 [based on age at enlistment; census recs]. He died in Lowell, MA on 5 June 1894, aged 67 yrs, 3 mos,24 das [ME death rec], his body sent back to Great Falls (Somersworth), NH for burial in Forest Glade Cemetery.

He was first married, in Somersworth, NH on 30 June 1844 [NH vr], to HANNAH B DAVIS. She was born in 1825 [grave] and died in 1865 [grave]. She is buried in Forest Glade Cemetery, Somersworth. She may be the daughter of William and Hannah (Brooks) Davis. Their son Daniel N Davis married Elihu's sister Mary Jane in 1840. Her middle initial "B" could stand for Brooks.

Elihu secondly married, on 30 Aug 1870 in Lowell, MA [MA vr], to HANNAH H MELVIN, the daughter of Daniel and Betsey Melvin. She was born in Maine ca 1842, and died after the 1920 census. Her burial place is not known. She did not have any children.

Elihu was about 17 years old when he married in 1844, possibly already living in Somersworth by that time. Soon after 1850, Elihu moved to Manchester, NH, where he continued his manufacturing trade. He is still not found in the 1860 and 1870 censuses, but he had moved to Lowell by 1870, where he remained until his death. His connection to South Berwick, his residence listed on the muster rolls, is unknown.

Elihu and his first wife had at least the following children:
I. EDGAR L MILLS, born 30 Nov 1848 (calc from age at death); died on 17 Apr 1854 in Manchester, NH from croup, aged 5 yrs, 4 mos,17 das [NH death rec]. Burial listed as "Great Falls, NH".

II. ALBERT M MILLS, born abt 15 Mar 1851 (calc from age at death); died in Manchester, NH on 15 May 1852 from scarlet fever, aged 1 yr, 2 mos [NH death rec]. Burial listed as "Great Falls, NH".

III. AFFIE (AFFA) A MILLS, born Mar 1854 [1900 census] in Manchester, NH [marr rec]; died in 1924 [grave]. She married, on 29 Apr 1889 in Lowell, MA, to MORRIS S BLODGETT, the son of Sylvester and Clarissa Blodgett. He was born in Nelson, NH [marr rec] in Jan 1851 [1900 census], and died in 1920 [grave]. They are both buried in Forest Glade Cemetery, Somersworth, NH. Morris was an engineer at a cotton mill in Lowell, MA, where the couple lived their lives. They did not have any children.

Additional Source Data:
1850 Portsmouth, Rockingham, NH census: hh 84/116 Elihu "H", Hannah and son Edgar living w/ Dan'l and Mary J Davis. This is his sister, who also married a Davis. She died in 1896, the dau of Joseph and Polly (Jones) Mills, and was buried in Forest Glade Cemetery. Joseph and Polly were married around 26 July 1818 in Lebanon, Maine. Joseph may have died by 1850, as there is a Mary Mills in Somersworth, age 53, with a Joseph, age 18 and Sarah, age 13, who may be Elihu's family.
