CHARLES S NORMAN was born in South Berwick, Maine [Descriptive Roll] circa 1835, perhaps the son of Benjamin and Hannah (Beal) Norman [NEHGR v117 p226: Benjamin Norman of New Vineyard, ME and Hannah Beal of York married 30 Jan 1825; research of M.Atkinson]. He died in Spokane, Spokane, WA on 12 June 1893 [widow's pension app; WA Death Rec] and was buried in a "cemetery at Spokane" [Headstone Order; this rec shows death as 25 July]. A Find a Grave entry shows him in Greenwood Memorial Terrace Cemetery in Spokane.
He was married first to MARIA E WATERMAN, on 7 Oct 1854 by Jacob K Cole, JP, supposedly in Biddeford, Maine [Bidd VR p475]. She was "of Gorham, ME", the daughter of John and Lydia (Hamilton) Waterman [Hist of Gorham p805]. She presumably died between 1885, when seen in 1885 Colorado State Census, and 1889, when Charles remarried. Burial place unknown.
Charles married secondly, on 6 Feb 1889 in Salida, Chaffee, CO (by Rev Augustus Chase, Methodist Minister), to Mrs ALMEDA (DAVIS) WELLINGTON. She was born in New York circa Apr 1843 [1900 census], the daughter of Egbert Davis. She died in Spokane on 28 July 1917 at age 75 [WA Death Rec]. See additional notes below for more data on Almeda.
Charles was a stone and brick mason, first seen as a laborer in 1850 York, Maine census with Henry and Hannah Atkinson. He moved with them to South Berwick prior to 1854, when he was "of South Berwick" at time of his marriage. Following his service with the 27th Maine, he moved with his family to Fall River, MA, his step-brother Henry Atkinson also a mason there. After 1878 he moved west, his wife and now married daughters enumerated in the 1880 Chicago, IL census (Charles' whereabouts unknown at that time). He continued west soon after, settling in Chaffee County, CO by 1885 [State Census]. After his 1889 remarriage, he removed to Spokane, WA, and was living at the Falls by 1890 [Street Dir]. Here, he kept his trade of masonry work.
By his first wife, he had three daughters (unknown if there were other children):
I. IDA NORMAN, born in (perhaps South Berwick) Maine about 1858 (age 2 in 1860; 12 in 1870; 22 in 1880). It is currently not known if she is the same Ida who died in Chicago on 4 Oct 1908 at age 51 [Chicago Tribune, ii 14 Oct; IL Death Index]. She was married to WILLIAM D KOONS prior to the 1880 census. He was born ca 1854 in NY, and was listed as a grocery clerk that year, in the census and street directory, living at 710 W Lake St. In Charles' pension papers filed in 1891, a W D Koons, known to him 15 yrs, is a witness to his signing. Indeed, a William D Koons is seen at same address with Charles in 1890 Spokane, also a bricklayer.
II. CARRIE NORMAN, born in (perhaps South Berwick) ME circa 1861-62 (age 8 in 1870; 19 in 1880). She is seen in 1880 Chicago census as married, with the MOSS surname. Husband's name not known at this time. She had a daughter with her at time of census:
1. Jessie Moss, born Mar 1880 in (Chicago?) IL
III. a daughter, shown only with the "J" initial in 1885 CO State Censuss, age 5, born IL. Her whereabouts after this is unknown.
