GEORGE W OAKES was born circa Jan 1842 or '43, likely the son of Benjamin and Harriet (Kimball) Oakes of Kennebunk,ME. He died on 25 Apr 1871 at age 28 yrs, 3 mos [Kenn VR] or age 29 y, 3 mos [grave transcrp], probably in Kennebunk [Kennebunk VR], and was buried in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk Village [YCCI, p812].
George married first, date uncertain, to EMMA WESTON. She died on 28 May 1869 at age 19 yrs ,5 mos from consumption [Kenn VR], and is buried in Hope Cemetery w/ husband [YCCI p812].
He secondly married, on 11 Dec 1870 [Kenn VR], to FANNIE S CLARKE of Wells, ME [intents filed on the 6th - VR of Wells p490]. Her whereabouts unclear after death of George, except that she filed for a widow's pension on 12 Sept 1871 (app #198,963 cert #170,417).
In the 1850 Kennebunk census, George is living with mother Harriet, his father Benjamin having just died the prior year on 31 May 1849 [Kenn VR] from consumption at age 36. Harriet died the following year, on the 4th or 5th of May 1851, at age 36 or 37 from bleeding of lungs [Kenn VR]. By 1860, George was living with Samuel B and Clarissa Jellsion. Her maiden name was Oakes, and perhaps she was a sister to his father.
Following his service in the 27th Maine Infantry, George reenlisted into the 2nd Maine Cavalry, Co L, on 24 Dec 1863 at age 20. He was mustered out on 6 Dec 1865 in Barrancus, FL [ACWS]. His widow Fannie, on filing for a pension, used only his service in this regiment.
It is not known if any children were born to either wife. None were with George during the 1870 Kennebunk census.
