Horatio, also known as "Rashe", was a long time mariner (as was his father), spending nearly his entire life on the water. According to his obituary, he visited "about all of the ports of the world". During the Irish famine, he made his first trip across the Atlantic on board the "Alice Tarlton" [see notes below], a Portsmouth based barque that delivered supplies to the ports of Ireland. A sailor in 1850 census, he was a master mariner by the 1860 census.
For a time after the war, he was appointed government pilot on the navy yard, and ran the steamer Portfire. In 1879 [21 Dec 1879 Portsmouth Daily Herald], Capt Trefethen purchased the steamer "Mystic" which he used as a ferry between Kittery and Portsmouth for many years.
He retired just a few years prior to his death, his last occupation being a ship keeper on the navy yard.
Horatio did not have any children of his own, though he and his wife Harriet did adopt two nieces [children of her sister Ellen M. (Lord) Green, who died in 1871; her husb Thomas O. Green died in 1873]. His second wife had a son, Charles W. Seaward, who is buried in same plot as Horatio and Sarah.
i. (adopted) HATTIE GREEN, b. ca 1860 (age 10 in 1860; a. 19 in 1870)
ii. (adopted) LIZZIE I. GREEN, b. ca 1869 (age 1 in 1870; a.11 in 1880); died 4 Feb 1881, aged 12 yrs; Bur in plot with Horatio's parents in Orchard Grove cemetery [YCCI, pg 1101]

The "Alice Tarlton" is first seen in the shipping logs starting in 1847 [Newburyport Herald, 2/26/47], when listed as "new, 309 tons". It was mastered by "Trefethen", perhaps his father Jeremiah (though there were many mariners of that surname), as Horatio was only 14 at that time. It was cleared at Portsmouth in Feb '47, heading to Baltimore to load up supplies for Europe. It hit the ports of Cork and Waterford in Ireland, and returned from London in Oct. - I did not continue with further shipping research.
