GEORGE WASHINGTON WAKEFIELD was born circa Jan 1833 [1900 census; based on ages in other census rec's; age at enlistment would indicate an 1835 year] in Conway, Carroll, NH [Descriptive Roll], the son of John and Mary Wakefield. He died on 3 Dec 1903 in Pawtucket, Providence, RI, and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Pawtucket, RI [RI Hist Cem Database].
He was first married to an EMMA B, on 15 Sept 1856 in Fryeburg, Maine [divorce papers]. He filed for divorce in May 1864, his wife having moved out of his house around the 15th of Sept 1863 and was committing an act of adultery. The letters of Charles Gooch, who served with George in Co I, make mention of the possible unfaithfulness of the said wife while her husband was away serving in Virginia. The certificate for divorce was issued on 27 Jan 1865 [York County Supreme Judicial Court papers, vol 22 pg 104]
George married secondly, on 24 Jan 1867, probably in Kennebunk, to MARY ENGLISH [Kennebunk VR]. She was the daughter of Asa and Phebe English. She was born ca July 1833 [1900 census] and died on 29 Mar 1907 in Pawtucket, RI. She is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Following his service in the 27th Maine, he reenlisted as a corporal into Co. L of the 2nd Maine Cavalry, aged 28, mustered in on 24 Dec 1863. He was promoted to Full Sergeant in 1864, and was mustered out on 6 Dec 1865 in Barancas, FL.
Called a ship carpenter on his marriage record of 1867, he was listed as a farmer in the following census. Prior to the 1880 census, he removed with wife and daughter to Pawtucket, RI, where he was occupied as a house carpenter.
George and Mary had one child:
I. PHEBE E WAKEFIELD, born 30 June 1868 in Kennebunk, ME [Kenn. VR]. Lived with her parents, and didn't marry. She died on 14 Mar 1952 and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Pawtucket, RI. She worked as a dressmaker [1910 census, 1918 St Dir].
