JOHN G WHITTEN, perhaps the son of Amaziah and Nancy Whitten [lived in their hh in 1860 census], was born about 1837 in Alfred, Maine [Descriptive Roll]. He died on 30 July 1864 in Petersburg, Virginia, his burial place is unknown.
He married, 9 Mar 1864 in Kennebunk [Kennebunk VR], to ANN MARIA STOVER. She was born in Kennebunk, Maine on 15 Feb 1838, the daughter of George W and Esther A (Perkins) Stover [MA death rec]. She died in Boston on 29 Apr 1915 [MA vr; pension papers], having remarried in 1896 to Alfred B Murphy [MA vr], and was buried in Hope Cemetery with second husband and his family [YCCI, pg 818].
During the 1850 Alfred, Maine census, John G was living in the household of Issachar and Abigail Kimball, age 13. In 1860 Sanford, he was with Amaziah Whitten and his second wife Catherine (first wife Nancy having died in 1850), John working as a house carpenter.
Following his time with the 27th Maine Volunteers, he enlisted as a 2nd Lieut. with the 32nd Maine Infantry on 3 March 1864 and was mustered in on 5 Apr '64 for 3 years. He was later promoted to 1st LT of Company F. During the Battle of Burnside's Mine at Petersburg on 30 July 1864, he was killed at Cemetery Hill. Affidavit's were filed by Col Wentworth and Capt Fall, attesting to the certainty of his death at the mine. Capt Isaac P Fall states "just prior to my capture at the mine at 10 o'clock, not more than five minutes before, I was in conversation with Whitten". Wentworth says "that he was missing from and after that time and was never seen after the engagement. I have no doubt he was killed in action at that time".
His widow Annie filed for a pension on 29 Jan 1866 (app #120,080 cert #77,895). They had no children.
