Amos S Anderson
Rank: Cpl Co: E Age: 24 Residence: Wells Birthplace: Sackville, NB Occupation: stonecutter Married/Single: S Height: 5' 10 Eyes: Bl Hair: Br Complexion: Lt

AMOS S ANDERSON was born on 9 Aug 1838 in Sackville, New Brunswick [Naturalization papers], the son of Amos and Mary Anderson, also born in New Brunswick. He died on 3 Apr 1926 [Plainville, MA Street Directory]. He is buried in the New Plainville Cemetery [SUVCW site].

He married in Smithfield, RI on 25 Nov 1868 to DACIE A STREETER, who was born about May, 1844, perhaps in Smithfield, RI, the daughter of Alfred and Mary A. [IGI - Marr Rec's of Central Falls (Smithfield) 1725-1948] She died between the 1910 and 1920 census, likely in Mass. Records spell her name in various ways [Dacy, Docia, Daisy, etc]. This was her second marriage [1910 census data], her first was to a James E Baker (1 Aug, 1866 Burrillville, RI - IGI marr rec).

The 1900 census gives an immigration year of 1851 for Amos, though 1853 is written in the naturalization papers for he and brother William (who was also in the 27th Maine Infantry), having arrived through the port of Boston. Still unclear, but he may have come to the states at the same time as his parents and siblings. Not one to stay long in one location, every census decade placed Amos in a different town. From his early years during the Civil War, he lived in Wells, ME, but later moved to Rhode Island (likely Providence and Smithfield) and Colchester, CT, and afterwards seen in Gloucester, Monson, Weymouth, and Plainville, Massachusetts. He lived his life as a stone cutter.

Amos and Dacie had 6 children, all but the eldest were born while the family lived in Gloucester, MA:

I. HERBERT L ANDERSON, born ca 1869, possibly in Providence, RI [data on marr rec], died in Monson, MA in 1893 [MA vr v.436,p.714]. He was married 20 Aug, 1887 in N.Brookfield,MA to HATTIE A FORD, the daughter of Cyrus and Harriet. She was born in Keene, NH [marr rec], perhaps circa 1867 [age of Herbert was in error on marr rec, so unclear whether hers is reliable]. They had two known children, who went to live with Amos and Dacie some time after their father died [not yet known what happened to mother].

   1. Althea B Anderson, born Dec, 1899. She died by the 1910 census.

III. BLANCHE F ANDERSON, born 7 Mar 1875 [MA vr v.268,p.199]. She never married and lived in Plainville, MA, at 20 South St, from at least 1920 until her death on 10 July, 1937

IV. MINNIE D ANDERSON, twin, born 22 Mar 1877 [MA vr v.286,p.189], called Annie D on vr. She married on 5 Oct, 1898 in Monson, MA [MA vr v.478,p.642] to CHARLES P RAMSEY, the son of Rodney H and Martha, who was born in Charlestown,MA. He was a train dispatcher. I haven't extended this family further.

V. MAE WELLS ANDERSON, twin, born 22 Mar 1877 [MA vr v.286,p.189], she was called Mary W on vr. She married on 20 Aug 1896 in Monson, MA [v.460,p.674] to CHARLES S THAYER, the son of William F and Clarissa, a Monson native. He was a barber and later worked in a hat factory when they moved to Fishkill, NY. In 1910, they had a daughter:
   1. Dacie B Thayer, age 1 in 1910 census

VI. GRACE E ANDERSON was born 12 Jan 1880 [MA vr v.313,p.197] and died in Monson, MA on 24 Dec, 1880 of diptheria [MA vr v.319,p.368]
