Pliny F Drew
Rank: Pvt Co: A Age: 21 Residence: Limerick Birthplace: Newfield Occupation: sch teacher
Married/Single: S Height: 5' 9 Eyes: Bl Hair: Br Complexion: Dk

PLINY (or PLINEY) FISKE DREW was born in Newfield, Maine [Descriptive Roll] on 27 Jun 1841 [Bowdoin College Catalog, 1894], parentage not yet known. He died from variola (ie small pox) at the Kalorama Hospital in Washington, DC on 19 Jan 1863. He was buried in the Military Asylum Cemetery in Washington, now called the Soldiers Home National Cemetery (section D, grave #3995).

Though I have yet to find Pliny in the 1850 census, he was in Limerick by 1860, a school teacher living in the household of Arthur Burbank and family. He went on to attend the Maine State Seminary in Lewiston, Maine, listed in their 1861 and 1862 yearbooks. That latter year, he enrolled in Bowdoin College, a member of the class of 1866. Like many of his classmates (including James A Bedell of South Berwick, also in the 27th ME), he left his schooling behind to join with the army. That winter, he became ill with small pox and was sent to the Kalorama House, also called the "small pox house", in the Capital, and died there.
