GEORGE HENRY YORK, the son of Josiah and Catherine (Davis) York, was born in Wells, Maine about Mar 1841 [1900 census; this year fairly consistent with ages in census records] and not on 27 Mar 1843 as his death rec claims, as his brother has a May 1843 birth date. He died on 18 June 1931 in Kennebunk, Maine [ME VR] and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Kennebunk.

He married, ca 9 Oct 1863 [intents filed, Wells VR p330], HANNAH A BUTLAND, the daughter of Jedediah and Hannah (Russell) Butland. She was born in Kennebunk on 7 Dec 1844 [gravestone; ME VR] and died in Kennebunk on 16 Oct 1908 [ME VR]. She is buried with her husband in Evergreen Cemetery.

Census records show that George, while living in Wells, worked as a seaman [1860] and as a laborer [1870-80], becoming a fisherman and owning his own boat following his move to Kennebunk around 1881 [1900-20 censuses]. During the War of the Rebellion, his brothers William H and Enoch also served with him in the 27th Maine Volunteers.

The "Vital Records of Wells" show George and Hannah having six children. The 1900 census states she had seven (five alive at enumeration).
