What is now known as Memorial Day was once called Decoration Day, and was originally a day set aside to honor those soldiers who died during the Civil War, to visit and decorate their graves on the 30th of May.

Died 20 or 21 May 1864 near New Orleans, on board the steamer "J H Goesback". Stricken with typhoid fever, he was placed on the ship for transport to the hospital in New Orleans, but died while still docked. He was buried in the Monument (now Chalmette) National Cemetery in New Orleans, LA.
